How to choose an AC repair company in Tampa Bay

By AC Repair ScoutUpdated November 6, 2026Figures refresh from live listings

When the AC stops in a Tampa Bay summer, the temptation is to book whoever answers first. A few calm checks, ideally made before anything breaks, help you pick a company you will be happy to call again.

Start with the job

A repair, a tune-up, a new system, a heat pump or a ductless mini-split are different jobs, and not every company does all of them. Decide what you need, then look for companies that say they do that work. You can filter the directory by AC repair, tune-ups and maintenance plans, installation and replacement or heat pumps.

Across 26 areas we list 641 AC companies (as of November 6, 2026): 580 for AC repair, 537 for tune-ups and maintenance plans, 616 for installation and replacement, and 391 for heat pumps.

Check the Florida licence

Florida licenses air conditioning and mechanical contractors through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). Ask for the licence number and look it up yourself on myfloridalicense.com: the record shows the name, the licence type and whether it is active. How to check a licence walks through it.

351 AC companies in the directory publish a licence number we could record. We show it as published; check the register for its current status.

Ask about certifications

Under the federal Clean Air Act, technicians who work with refrigerant need EPA Section 608 certification (EPA). NATE certification is voluntary: it shows a technician passed industry knowledge tests (NATE). Ask whether the technician coming to your home holds them.

58 AC companies say their technicians are EPA 608 certified, and 89 AC companies say they employ NATE-certified technicians. That is what the company states, not something we have tested.

Insurance: ask for the certificate

A technician works inside your home, in your attic and on electrical equipment. Ask for a certificate of insurance and read what it covers and for which dates. Calling the insurer named on the certificate is a normal thing to do.

338 AC companies state that they carry insurance. We show the statement as published; we do not see the policy itself.

Know the visit fee before they come

Many companies charge a service-call or diagnostic fee to come out and find the problem. Ask what it is, whether it is credited towards the repair, and what evenings, weekends and holidays cost.

93 AC companies publish a service-call or tune-up price, 202 AC companies mention upfront or flat-rate pricing and 370 AC companies mention free estimates.

Get the quote in writing

0 AC companies describe a warranty on their own site, and 83 AC companies offer free second opinions.
