Repair or replace your AC: what to ask before you decide

A big repair quote on an older system raises the question: fix it again, or replace it? There is no single rule, but the right questions make the choice clearer.

Questions about your system

Get both prices in writing

Ask for a written repair quote, and if replacement is suggested, a written quote for that too: brand, model, size, efficiency rating, what is included (removal, permits, ductwork, thermostat) and the warranties on equipment and labour. A replacement should be sized for your home; ask how they worked out the size.

616 AC companies in our directory list installation and replacement (as of November 6, 2026), and 373 AC companies mention financing.

Get a second opinion

For a large repair or a new system, a second opinion is normal and worth the time. Ask the second company to look at the same problem and price the same job, so you can compare like with like.

83 AC companies offer free second opinions and 370 AC companies mention free estimates.

Rebates and incentives

Utilities and government programmes sometimes offer rebates or tax credits for efficient equipment. They change often, so check with your utility and the official programme pages rather than relying on a sales quote.

Check the company’s Florida licence and insurance, as in how to check a licence, and confirm who pulls the permit. How to choose an AC repair company

This is general information, not legal, insurance or contracting advice. Every home and system is different: confirm details with the AC company, the licence register and, for equipment, the manufacturer’s guidance and warranty terms.
